24-25 February 2010, Heiden, Germany

In recent years increasing prices for fertilizers, intensive animal husbandry and the utilization of energy crops for producing biogas and biomethane have led to technological development and innovations in digestate and manure treatment technologies.
Today treated digestate from the digestation of organic waste and recently also from energy crops can be certified by quality associations and have permission to be used as a biological fertilizer according to the EU organic agriculture ordinance.
The products of the conditioning are mainly used for substitution of compost, peat and fertilizer, but lately also as a solid fuel. In such specific types of use especially the balance of nutrients and humus of the soils have to be considered.
Research proved apart from the improvement of the availability of nutrients and of environmental sustainability, that also enzymes and phytohormones in the digestate directly affects the soil and plant health.
Different technologies for partial or complete conditioning were further developed and developed into a marketable product. The congress inspired the exchange of practical experiences, the development of the technology and new research approaches.
